The cocktail originated in 1776 in a tavern in Elmsford, New York, decorated with chicken tail feathers. One day when the pub was running out of wine, some officers came in and asked for a drink. One named Betsy. Flanagan's hostess poured all the leftover wine into a large container, and plucked a hair from a rooster to stir it up and serve it. When the officers looked at the wine and couldn't tell what it tasted like, they asked Betsy, who replied, "It's a cocktail!" An officer, hearing the word, raised his glass joyfully and exclaimed, "Chicken star wine!" Since then, it has been called "cocktail".
