Opus 1 currently has four vineyards, located west of Oakville, two of which are located in the famous To Kalon vineyard and two surrounding the estate, Ballestra and River, with a total vineyard area of 70 hectares. Five grape varieties are grown in the garden: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
In terms of winemaking, Opus 1 not only retains the traditional artificial harvesting method to maximize the acidity and fresh fruit flavor of the grapes, but also constantly introduces and updates winemaking technology and equipment, making the winemaking method more sophisticated. For example, one of the only two giant optical grape sorting facilities in Napa Valley is at Opus One Winery. After fermentation, Opus 1 is aged in oak barrels for about 18 months, and the wine is bottled for another 15 months before it is released on October 1 each year. In other words, it takes three years from the beginning of the harvest of Opus 1 to the final release of the vintage.
